Main features

Capture and annotate, record your screen, pin references, and copy or translate on-screen text.

These animations show the macOS version. The Windows version has the same features with a different interface and options.

Capture and record

Annotation, scrolling capture, and recording

Annotate a region screenshot right after you take it, with undo and redo. Scrolling capture stitches long pages and documents into one image, scrolling manually or automatically. Record as GIF or MP4 and annotate while recording. MP4 can capture system audio and microphone audio at the same time.

Add arrows, shapes, text, highlights, pixelation, spotlight, numbered steps, and pencil marks. Undo and redo are supported.

Quick Access and pinned screenshots

After each capture, a thumbnail stays in a corner of the screen. Copy it, save it, pin it, or drag it straight into a chat or document. A pinned screenshot stays above other windows and can be resized. With click-through on, your clicks go to the window underneath.

Recognize and translate

Text recognition and screen translation

Select text on screen to recognize it on your computer and copy the result. Screen translation also recognizes text locally and sends only that text to your configured translation service, not the screenshot.

Local history

Local history includes screenshots, recordings, and copied text, images, and files. Search and filter it, remove duplicates automatically, and set retention and cleanup rules.

Global shortcuts

Every global shortcut can be changed. On macOS, ⇧⌘1 starts a capture by default. Windows uses Ctrl+Shift combinations by default.

Audio-only recording

Record sound without video. If you need a transcript, you can optionally use cloud transcription and AI notes with services you configure.

shotpaste:// links

Open a shotpaste:// link to start a capture, open history or settings, or control a recording. Useful in scripts and automation tools.

Local MCP service

The local MCP service lets compatible clients call ShotPaste and requires authentication. Clients can check status, start or cancel a capture, open history and settings, and control recordings.

10 interface languages

Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Vietnamese.

Screenshots and recordings are processed on your computer

Capturing, recording, annotation, and text recognition happen on your computer, and history is stored there too. The features below send content only when you use them, and only to services you configure.

Captures and recordings are never sent to ShotPaste servers. You choose and configure these services. They may require an API key and charge their own fees. ShotPaste works without subscribing to them, and the download does not include credits for any third-party service.

The macOS and Windows versions are developed separately and share the same main features. The table shows support and differences in the reviewed versions.

Each platform is released separately, so version numbers may differ. Interfaces and options for the same feature can also differ. Screen translation on Windows does not depend on Agent and works on its own.

Is ShotPaste free?

Yes. ShotPaste is free to download and open source under the BSD 3-Clause license. Translation, cloud transcription, AI notes, and Agent connect to third-party services that you configure. Those services may require an API key and charge their own fees. The ShotPaste download does not include credits for any third-party service.

Which version should I download for my Mac?

Choose Apple silicon for a Mac with an M-series chip, or Intel for a Mac with an Intel processor. If you're not sure, open Apple menu › About This Mac. System requirements: macOS 13+

macOS says it can't verify the developer. What should I do?

Reviewed versions use a project self-signed certificate. If you see this message, read the installation guide for that version first, then follow the system prompts in Privacy & Security. For newer versions, check the release notes for signing status.

How do the Windows and macOS versions differ?

Both include region screenshots, scrolling capture, annotation, recording, pinned screenshots, Quick Access, text recognition, screen translation, and history. macOS can show translations in place of the original text; Windows translates the full screen or a selected region. Agent is an experimental macOS feature and is not yet supported on Windows. Interfaces and options also differ.

Are my screenshots uploaded?

Screenshots are processed and stored on your computer. Screen translation sends only the recognized text, not the screenshot. If you turn on Agent (macOS only, experimental), it may send screenshots and context to your configured model service, depending on your settings. See “Where your data goes” for details.

Can I control ShotPaste from scripts or other tools?

Yes. shotpaste:// links can start a capture, open history or settings, and control recordings. The local MCP service requires authentication and lets compatible clients check status, start or cancel a capture, and control recordings. On macOS, settings are stored in a portable config.toml file. All global shortcuts can be changed.
